Favourite music video analysis: Maroon 5 - Payphone ft. Wiz Khalifa

Genre
The genre of music video is a narrative used in an intertextual way to create a action film style video, with the events and visual codes throughout put together to create a short narrative of your typical action film, with scenes of gunfire, car chases explosions and romance for the hero.

The video narrative is of the protagonist that works in a bank at a payphone trying contact his love interest surrounded by fire. this then takes us to a flashback where the bank that he works at is robbed and in the process of getting a women out who appears to be a love interest to him, gets mistaking by the police as a criminal and ends up being pursued himself.
There are intertextual  references to action films throughout the film giving the music video a clear theme of narrative with only a few scenes that are performance based, allowing the action theme of the video to be set.

Narrative
The music video Shows Todorov's theory but not all the way through with the video starting at equilibrium, there being a distribution followed by recognition and ending halfway through resolution not getting all the way back to equilibrium again.

The lyrics reflect the song to some extent with Maroon 5 singing all the lyrics into a payphone as the chorus sings and the flashback creating a action themed story about the protagonist and his love interest being separated by a string of events and now his just trying to call her to get home to her where he believes he belongs even though it no longer is possible.

Representation
Representation is used in this video stereotypically showing gender putting a women as the damsel in distress and maroon 5 - the male a hero who she needs to save the woman from the criminals who are robing the bank. He then however in a twist in the music video becomes a anti-hero as the police mistake him for one of the robbers in the heist and he goes on the run. when he gets into the car lots of low angles are then used to show he has power and control as he is being chased and through out while he is in the payphone again to conetate the same thing.

The music video has a few locations the main one in the payphone where maroon 5 does the performance part of the video (all the lip syncing). The other locations consist of the bank where the heist takes part break up the equilibrium then on the streets, then the highway for the chase.
The majority of the video that is a flash back of his day is in very low-key lighting even when outside with high-key used when in normal time with maroon-5 in the payphone. this is to cause juxtaposition between the flashbacks and normal time.

Camera
Lots of low angles and close ups are used on maroon 5 to give him power and represent him as the hero throughout as well as low angles shots on the girl to make her seem helpless giving her a damsel in distress role.
The editing begins at a slow pace however speeds up as the heist happens with lots of cuts however the camera also moves around to follow the protagonist and we are even giving a shot during the chase from his point of view.

Audience
The audience for this video based on the context of the video is mainly males due to the actions however certain element like the love story with the damsel in distress and the way maroon 5 is represented to look like an action hero and look manly and charming combined with the type of song his audience is main teenage female.

From analysing this video it has helped me when coming to my own by giving me a clear idea of how to use representation to show off propp's theory of characters within media, with a strong hero, damsel and villains shown throughout the music video. I now believe that I could bring these characters into my own video to support the narrative.

Own Video Goodwins Therory

Olly Murs - Wrapped Up

1. All videos demonstrate certain genre characteristics. for example male boy bands and female singers all use dance routines, rappers will throw loads of gang signs.
The Olly Murs one shows him performing a dance routine on a treadmill with girls and backup dancers jumping in and out of the frame, being pop music this is stereotypical to the genre with them always including some kind of visual performance/dance.

2. There is always a relationship between lyrics and visual. it will either illustrate or contradict the words.
The video both illustrates and contradicts the words as although there connected it is more a dance inspired by the words than a physical illustrating of what his singing word for word.

3. there is a relationship between the music and the visuals. This could be how its edited or the movement in the piece in time to the music or cut to the beat.
The video is edited to look like an illusion of someone's head spinning in a confusing continues shot that is actually lots of different shots merged together to look like one with a few occasional cuts to the beat.

4. The demands of the record label that need for lots of close ups of the artist in order to promote them.
5. The artist may develop modifies or iconography that recut across their work. It has a repetitive visual style.
The video has a lot of close ups of the artist (Olly) and has a similar lay out to a lot of his other videos with a scene creating a kind of narrative happening behind him but the main focuses on him lip syncing the song.

6. There are frequently reference to the notion of looking. There will be TV screens or video cameras. or References to looking at a female body for pleasure.
Throughout the video there are constant references to looking at women especially in this video, with Olly Murs waking around dance from girl to girl starring into there eyes and all the background dancers being represented as attractive females switching from dancing and poseing to use male gaze.

7. There are intertextual references mostly film but also other music videos or in some cases popular culture.
There is intertextual reference to  the music video "OK Go - Here It Goes Again" in the way that it is design to be an almost continues take of  a dance routine performed on treadmills however Olly's is a lot more modern and has been edited to look a lot smaller and include more visual effects.

Goodwin's theory notes

In 1992 Andrew Goodwin published a book called 'dancing the distraction factory' which where years of research into music videos.
In the book he came up with codes and conventions for  music videos called Goodwin's 7.

1. All videos demonstrate certain genre characteristics. for example male boy bands and female singers all use dance routines, rappers will throw loads of gang signs.

The example I have is a girls aloud and busted music video both contain a dance routine and singing into microphones both stereotypes of their type of genre.

2. There is always a relationship between lyrics and visual. it will either illustrate or contradict the words.

The example I have used is Lunchmoney Lewis- Bills were the visual are him playing a few different charters working for a living to pay there bills like the lyrics of the song.

3. there is a relationship between the music and the visuals. This could be how its edited or the movement in the piece in time to the music or cut to the beat.

4. The demands of the record label that need for lots of close ups of the artist in order to promote them. most Britney spear videos are a good example of this as she will have hundreds of close ups throughout, The video I have as an example is toxic.

5. The artist may develop modifies or iconography that recut across their work. It has a repetitive visual style.

the example I have for this is George Ezra as all of his videos have a similar lay out where for the majority of it he lip syncs the song with a small amount of narrative happening around him.

6. There are frequently reference to the notion of looking. There will be TV screens or video cameras. or References to looking at a female body for pleasure.

The screen shots for the example  I have for screens of screens is Hard Fi - Stars of CCTV as the video is based around them performing there song and hacking in to broadcast to perform it so cameras and TV screens are used throughout.

The example I have for looking at the female body comes from 50 Cent - Candy Shop as it is about him visiting a brothel with women dancing and showing off there bodies to 50 cent.

7. There are intertextual references mostly film but also other music videos or in some cases popular culture.
The examples I have are Lily Allen hard out here for intertextual use of popular culture and screenshot of Iggy Azalea - Fancy as well as the trailer for the film, as it copies the plot to clueless mocking the outfits and scenes from the film.

Goodwin's theory will be helpful when creating my own video as I can use it as a criteria to test my drafts and ideas against, and improve on to include if key ones are missing.

Textual Analysis - scouting for girls - She's so lovely

Genre
The genre of the video is pop, rock matching its artist. The narrative of the video is a mix between the lead vocalist bowling and falling for a girl who is both beautiful and really talented at bowling who he is trying hard to impress without getting in trouble with her boyfriend While the boyfriend is there, Roy tells the girl she looks beautiful. The boyfriend gets angry, but gets called away for his throw. As he scores a strike, and a performance of him and the rest of the band singing the song.

Narrative
The narrative has the complete cycle for Todorov Equliliburum theory with equilibrium at the start with everyone bowling, the distribution happening when the girl walks in and turns the head of everyone in the alley causing chaos as they all cant concentrate. there's realisation where the protagonist tells the girl she's beautiful and upsets her boyfriend, there is an attempt at repair where they begin to bowl against each other, and then equilibrium when the woman leaves with the protagonist while her boyfriend (the villain charter) is distracted.

The recognisable characters in the video are the hero (the main vocalist), a princess (pretty girl) and a villain / false hero her boyfriend. the video reflects the lyrics but subtly so the actions eco the words but are not a completely literal representation.

The video represents themes of gender stereotypically with use of male gaze theory, and the girl he is singing about being shown as a beautiful woman with her boyfriend at times using her as an object /arm candy representing male stereotypically as well.
The artist playing the hero in the video is constructed to look like a geeky bowler to conetate he is a shy ordinary guy to make him overcome his fear to ask her out that much more a triumph.

The video is set in three locations, the bowling alley, the dinner and the room where the band is performing. The bowling alley is the main location where all the drama happens and is just a standard kind of retro alley. The dinner is designed to look like an American one that you get on the side of the road however it appears to be attached as just an extra part of the alley. the final location looks like a living room converted into a rehearsal area with lower key lighting compared to the alley the narrative is taking place.

Camera
The main shots used through out are close ups and extreme close ups and are used in an almost comedic way to tell the narrative almost completely using male gaze theory as all the guys at the alley stare and the woman the song is about is angled up to look really pretty. there are also a lot of extreme close ups on the singers face in the performance shots, however using Goodwin's theory where the record label wants a certain amount of close ups in order to promote him as the image for scouting for girls.

Audience
The Audience for this video is mostly young adults (at time of release) as its stereotypically to what many where doing at that time being part of a bowling club.

Looking at this video it has helped me to understand how to create a good strong narrative using lots of fast paced shots. It has also given me an idea of how to edit our own video with good transitions between narrative and performance, and a fast paced used to give  a comedic style narrative that almost makes you laugh along next to the song when telling the story.

Impact Of Remake On My Own Music Video

Remaking the Brittney music video will have a positive impact on me allowing me to get practise with editing to a matching lip sync, as well as different camera angles of the artist performance which will make it feel more lifelike. This also means that when it comes to creating my own I will easily be able to plot a narrative design a storyboard and also have some idea on location scouting.
It will mainly give me experience and allow me to see on how to edit it in time to  the rhythm which is a skill that will be important in my own video as it splits up the different scenes.

Music video Audience

All music videos have an audience that they are aiming for, this usually depends on the artist and style of music. as each artist has there own individual demographic they will appeal to and therefore cater to more in their video.

A common misconception people make is that all pop music videos are generally aimed at teenagers although this isn't strictly the case.
An example of this is Michael Jackson earth song which is pop however the video is used to show the planet dying and people falling to there knees, which is designed to send a message to everyone about saving the planet, and not to glamorise the artist for teenagers by making them act or do something that they are seen to do.

In comparison to this there is Katy Perry's Roar which is of her in a jungle facing her fears and mirroring the lyrics with narrative. this video is designed to be more fun and appeal to a teenage audience as that is where the majority of her fan base is due to what she likes to include in her videos.

as a whole music videos arnt really aimed at one audience in particular as the entire purpose is to be promotional video to show of the artist, and showcase the songs so that people buy the album, this means that they are meant to appeal to the biggest audience possible, however certain videos will appeal to a very particular audience just because of how it is.

Sometimes a music video can be used to promote something else (synergy) as well as the song. an example of this is Wiz Khalifa - See You Again ft. Charlie Puth, which was also used as part of fast and furious 7 soundtrack, this was used to promote the film as well as tribute to Paul Walker  an actor associated with the franchise who died in an accident before the film was complete, as a proper send off. Due to this both the song and film did very well as people listened to it to as tribute and everyone was talking about it.

My section of the video

The section of the Britney that I am remaking is from 51 seconds - 1 minute 6 seconds this part consist of a few close up shots, a few shots of people looking out from there lockers and two short dance routines. There will be a tracking shot of the dancers walking forward that might be difficult to film, as well as when it comes to editing matching close ups from the dance to long shots.

Its also going be extremely difficult to match up the lip sync so I need to make sure I film some shots a few time to give the best chance of being able to line it up.
