Student music videos

This video is a pre-existing student video made it has a well thought out narrative and looks really professional being very well shot and edited together. However the song they used is a lot music with very quite words so you cant really hear it this causes a problem of there being no noticeable lip syncing throughout there video and in the scenes where there is a little you cant tell if it is in time or not.

Genre
The genre of the video is indie pop and the narrative they've used is very dark reflecting a lot of pain, violence and suffering. The music video is set the narrative appears to follow a number of events about a drug addict who beats up a guy with his friend to get money to make sure he got his next dose then trying to live with the guilt, and the journey of the victim afterwards pushing himself to get stronger in order to protect him self and retaliate so it doesn't happen again.

Narrative
The narrative appears to reach all 5 stages of the Todorov theory but I am a little unsure on how much because it keeps jumping around in time between the different storyline contained to make up the narrative, so its never quite clear to what's happing Where and when each event takes place in the timeline.
There are a few recognisable characters in the video, The first is a false hero who is the person doing the lip sync for the song. This is because his introduced right at the start as the protagonist but it is then revealed he is a drug addict who can act out violently in order to keep in intake coming in. the second character was the damsel in distress/victim and by the end hero who goes through a lot of pain and then pushes him self to become stronger.

Their video represents the theme of age through out. Focusing mostly on youth and the irresponsibility. With the video set them up to be thugs, who are addicted to drugs and are violent and dangerous.

The actor/artist in the video is betrayed to be  a young adult who is most probably a school drop out, who doesn't have a job, and spends all day everyday with messing get drunk and high with his mates. He is shown to be a drug addict but it also seems as if he has a conscience where he is uncomtibal and unhappy by how he is harming people to get what he needs but doesn't see any of way to gain the drugs.

Lots of locations are used in the video the main ones appears to be the street alley the beat up the victim, the boxing club where his trying to get stronger and the field and room were the protagonist(false hero) is suffering and doing the lip sync. The use of lots of different places at times makes the story hard to track however there use of low key and high key lighting to show the difference is cleverly used to get the contrast between the violent and after effects scenes.

Camera
They have used a variations of camera angles in there piece with a couple of establishing shots used to match the pace of the song at the start as well as a few passing of time shots where the camera is angled at the sky and cloud movement is speed up. There are a few canted angles used in action shots when tracking this has been used to give juxtaposition from the scenes where nothing really happened as well as the edit become more fast paced with lots of cuts used for effect.
Close ups are also used throughout the video at varies times to show how the characters are feeling with a close up on the victim showing fear and anger and another on the false hero / protagonist to show his fear and anxiety as his drug addiction causes more and more problems.
The mid shots in the video are used to set up the surrounding scene as well as capture emotion of the charters.
Reviewing the student video has helped me see what I need to include in my own and what I need to avoid. It has also allowed me too see how well lip syncing can be as well as a high standard that the video can meet.

What makes a good Student music video

To make a good student music video it is important to pick a song that you can make a clear and simple narrative too with lots of shots and lots of location. It is also important to make sure you can match the lip syncing to the audio with any performance otherwise it becomes really distracting and takes away from the overall end product.
Editing is also important as it needs to stay strong and consistent through out and cut to the beat or rhythm in order to give it a professional looking finish.

This student video is an example of one that works well, with strong editing a clear narrative that matches the conventions of the genre and on the most part strong lip syncing however there are moments where it drops.

Whole music video Analysis X3

The table is of three brief analysis of these 3 music videos, which looks at their genre, shots, editing, narrative, setting and representation.

From doing this activity I have learnt that different genres of music or different artist will incorporate different conventions into there videos. For example male pop singers will incorporate a lot of humour with Olly Murs even being a bit cheeky and flirty, as he knows a lot of his fans are girls while, lunch money Lewis just has a lot of fun with his video as he wanted to create a song everyone could enjoy. Female artist are different again including a lot more close ups and "Glamor" shots where the artist in this case Taylor Swift is made out to be beautiful and desirable, with a video more based on her than a full narrative with it as simple as boy meets girl, girl falls for boy only going against the normal conventions with boy married to someone else.
